A brand new collection from the world’s most famous watchmaker will receive its fair share of praise and controversy – in fact, everyone is a critic, and most of them haven’t tried the watches yet. Ibrahimovic is clearly an early adopter of this idea, and unlike Wahlberg, prefers the complex version. With other complex signals undoubtedly coming, we civilians will have to wait patiently to see what else Patek has up its sleeve.
Reference Patek Philippe from Look Combs. 5935 A
amazing! Combs, already a prolific watch collector, went all out with his latest piece. The country singer was spotted with a Patek Philippe reference. 5935A, an exquisite world time/flyback chronograph from the brand’s complication line. Housed in a 41mm case, this watch features a stainless steel construction, which is rare for a company that focuses primarily on precious metals. The rose gold-plated opaline dial features a world time display. The elegant Traveler complication was developed by Louis Cottier in the early 1900s and has long appeared in the Patek catalogue. With a flyback chronograph powered by an automatic movement, it takes on a completely different flavour.
Francisco Lindor Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther Flying Tourbillon”
It’s a great week for watches that have stolen the headlines. While Patek’s Cubitus currently takes up a lot of oxygen in watches, that status previously belonged to Francisco Lindor’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther Flying Tourbillon.” This limited edition watch, of which AP is making 250 pieces, puts the Marvel superhero front and center on the dial interlaced with Abraham-Louis Breguet’s famous invention of gravity compensation. Lindor was seen wearing it to a Knicks-Pacers game this week at Madison Square Garden, and he’s not the first famous athlete to rock the Black Panther: LeBron was an early adopter of the watch in 2021 when the watch was first released, and Serena Williams strapped one in as well. (Meanwhile, John Mayer and Ed Sheeran both wore the Spider-Man equivalent, each daring them to pick up the piece.)
Colman Domingo Panettiere de Cartier
It’s hard to argue with Panthère de Cartier, one of Cartier’s most elegant collections. While the brand describes the line as distinctly feminine and marketed to women, the zeitgeist of late has allowed for much wider adoption. Case in point: the ever-chic Colman Domingo wearing an oversized 18k yellow gold model at the 2024 LACMA Art+Film Gala at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. When stacked with an array of radiant Cartier jewelery – including earrings, bracelets and rings – the Panthère de Cartier is undeniably a masterpiece of unisex design.
Bruce Springsteen Rolex GMT-Master II
To infamously paraphrase Springsteen Jam’s “Land of Hope and Dreams,” “I don’t know where we’re going (in horological terms), But I know we won’t be back“. Ever since The Boss wore a vintage Heuer Autavia a few years ago – the first time I’d ever seen the man wear a watch – my Spidey senses have been refreshed. He’s been wearing a vintage Breitling ever since Rolling Stone interview, and my mind stopped for a moment. Now the man has been seen outside wearing a Rolex watch? Needless to say, Rollie was worth $10,000 or more no On my Boss bingo card When I come to Bergen County, NJ, do you have ideas on what’s next? I ask because I need to mentally steel myself the moment he shows up at the Prudential Center to play Darlington County Wearing a Royal Oak.
