The most complex reference. 5822P-001 – a model with a platinum case on a strap with a large date, small seconds counter and date/moon phase indicator – proved more contentious among collectors, who objected to its asymmetrical dial design. However, as Stern himself pointed out in Munich, the Aquanaut — the iconic luxury sports watch the brand launched in the 1990s — wasn’t exactly a success out of the gate. In the world of watches, new collections take time to develop and spread, and many of these watches evolve into some of the most sought-after pieces in the world. Remember that the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, which was expensive and unconventional at the time, was not an immediate success, and the “Paul Newman” Daytona references languished on shelves – sometimes for years – before fetching eye-popping prices at today’s auction.
Jay Z follows his north star in the watch industry. With a collection that includes all the major brands, he is not limited to a particular brand, model or complexity, instead he seems to choose what catches his eye. These include, of course, many Pateks, including a signed ref from Tiffany. 5961 Annual Calendar Chronograph, Ref. 5271/11P perpetual calendar, highly complex Grandmaster Chime, and Tiffany Blue Nautilus ref. 5711. It’s still early days for the Cubitus group and it will be some time before we know whether or not we have another approved token on our hands. But one thing is for sure: as Jay wears one, so does Cobitos Going Places.
John Mayer Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Minute Repeater Supersonnerie
As Audemars Piguet’s “creative conduit”, John Mayer can always be counted on to spark one of the many particularly impressive access points in his collection. Case in point: Mayer was recently seen on his SiriusXM show “How’s Life” wearing a black ceramic one-piece Royal Oak Supersonnerie minute repeater. A special edition of the popular Genta luxury sports watch, it is not only made of ceramic, but also includes a factory-set black Grand Tapisserie dial with 13 baguette-cut diamond hour markers. The pièce de résistance function is of course a supersonnerie (also known as a minute repeater) function, which means that the watch can audibly chime the time on command. Hey, what do you expect from a musician if not a clock ticking in your face?

Luke Combs continues to establish himself as an elite watch collector. He’s decided that this is the week he’ll take a page out of John Mayer’s book by rocking his Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Minute Repeater Supersonnerie to the 2024 CMAs.
