Christopher Nolan mania is more widespread these days than ever, he’s finally won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, and the hype around his next film is at peak even as there are roughly three to five competing theories about what it is. In fact, even re-releases of his older films can sell out your local IMAX theater faster than Supreme’s website on Thursdays at 11 a.m. But it’s not crazy to say that 10 years ago, his grip on the cinema streets was, if not as strong, then at least close to the fever pitch it is at now. His Batman trilogy feels so old that it can be hard to remember what the energy was like when he finally completed it. As classic as this series is, Prestige and beginning He proved that he somehow had more to offer outside of himself, on an equal if not greater scale. So, once his commitments to Gotham were over, it felt like a real generational race.
That was it! But as the first film of this new era, Interstellar He had an impossible amount of pressure on his shoulders. I can’t remember what my expectations were before it screened at Kips Bay IMAX a few weeks before its release, but they were not met. I was left feeling like I was missing something intangible. I don’t think I’ve watched it in its entirety again since.
Even last Friday, when I reserved a seat at the IMAX theater proper, some New Yorkers might say just that TRUE IMAX Theater, the nine-story screen at AMC Lincoln Square on the 68th – marking the 10th anniversary of the 70mm re-release. This is, inexplicably, the hottest ticket in town, having sold out as of the middle of this week at the same total moment it sold out OppenheimerNolan’s latest film, released last summer. So when I got a great seat at an inappropriate show at 10:45 a.m. on a Friday morning, I didn’t hesitate to pull out Don Draperwhich I only admit to the editors here because they get content from it.
Even in the morning, the energy felt different from countless other movies I’ve seen at the IMAX Mecca. I’ve spotted several men wearing Carhartts that approximate the coat worn by Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, InterstellarPopular astronaut hero. The ticket taker was jeering at everyone he scanned, telling me I had the best seat in the house. (I resisted the urge to respond with “I know,” because I’m not new to this — on the left of the screen, row J, in case you were wondering.)
Unsurprisingly, the verdict after 10 years was: I understand now. An emotion that surprised many people in the worst way, in all lands; It doesn’t seem long; Jessica Chastain does some of her best work on a low key. Man, that scene where Cooper goes back over 20 years of videos sent by his kids – watching the one who was 10 years older knocked me out. These days I especially feel busy, if not obsessed with how I spend my time; I’ve never felt more valuable to myself and I’ve never felt more aware of how easily I can waste it. maybe Interstellar It is inversely designed to get better as you get older; I can only imagine what it would be like to watch this scene as a real parent.
