So, how do you find products worth adding to your grooming routine? I’ve found that word of mouth is the most reliable indicator of product quality, but you can also glean a lot from ingredient lists. Besides the obvious (look for products that are free of parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances), check labels to make sure the product uses natural ingredients that moisturize and nourish facial hair. and The skin without irritating it. I look for ingredients like witch hazel, vitamin E, sunflower seed oil, avocado oil, squalane, and grapeseed oil.
Men with sensitive skin may also want to avoid products with heavy fragrances and essential oils, which can be too harsh on the skin. You can’t find many beard products that are fragrance-free, but they do exist if you look hard enough. Personally, products with botanical extracts and essential oils don’t irritate my skin, but they take it lightly regardless.
When shopping for beard trimmers and combs, make 100% sure that the product can handle the length of your beard before ordering. Many popular trimmers, including the ubiquitous Phillips Norelco Multigroom 9000 series, only trim hair up to 16 mm (about 0.63 inch) long. For longer beards, Panasonic, Bevel, and Braun trimmers work best. Likewise, look for beard combs with deep, fine teeth, otherwise they won’t be able to glide through your hair properly.
Finally, let me reiterate one important piece of advice: don’t overdo it. Your beard doesn’t need a million washes, balms, oils, and balms. Choose what suits your specific facial hair needs, not an “all of the above” style.
